How Seniors Can Stay Safe This Winter

December 21, 2021 | Kari Mellone

Winter is a time for getting cozy indoors, catching up on books and movies, and spending time with loved ones. However, the cold, snow and ice make winter more difficult for all Minnesotans. This is especially true for seniors or those with limited mobility. Stay safe this winter with these tips from care.com.

5 Winter Safety Tips for Seniors

1. Watch for Ice:

Slip and fall accidents are common in the winter months, and they can have long-term consequences for seniors. To avoid slipping on the ice and snow, experts recommend wearing shoes with good traction and non-skid soles. Remove shoes as soon as you come inside, so melting snow and ice doesn’t cause slippery conditions indoors. Replace cane tips as needed. If conditions are especially icy, stay inside or get help walking.

2. Dress Warmly:

We’re used to cold temperatures here in Minnesota, but it’s important to take them seriously. Hypothermia can set in quickly, so dress in layers with a warm coat, hat, gloves and scarf. When temperatures dip especially low, cover all exposed skin and limit time outdoors.

3. Prepare the Car:

Get your car serviced, and check the oil, battery, tires and windshield wipers. Put an emergency kit in your vehicle, with a blanket, extra warm clothes, and other necessities. It also may be a good idea to invest in an AAA membership, or stay safe with alternative transportation options.

4. Eat a Healthy Diet:

The short days of winter can lead to vitamin D deficiencies. Make sure you’re eating a healthy and varied diet, and take supplements as recommended by your doctor.

5. Monitor Mental Health:

Winter can lead to loneliness, isolation, and depression. Be proactive about maintaining contact with family and friends, and seek activities that will provide that essential human connection.
