There are many health care services that are not covered by Original Medicare. These include vision and preventative dental care, hearing aids, and prescription drug costs, among others. If you need coverage for these types of care (as the majority of seniors do) you’ll need to pay out of pocket or purchase additional policies, such as a vision, dental, and prescription drug plan to help cover the costs. One option for obtaining these extra benefits is to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan.
What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide coverage for your approved Part A and Part B coverage. Medicare Advantage plans have a network of contracted providers and facilities that you must stay within in order to receive coverage.
Extra Benefits Included in Medicare Advantage Plans
In 2019, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services decided to allow Medicare Advantage plans greater flexibility in the types of extra benefits they offered. In addition to standard diagnostic and preventative services, Medicare Advantage plans may now offer benefits that support overall physical and mental wellness, such as adult day services and caregiver support.
Here are a few of the extra benefits that may be included in your 2022 Medicare Advantage plan:

- Over-the-counter devices and supplements
- Meal delivery and nutrition education
- Hearing aids
- Telehealth
- Fitness center memberships
- Transportation to and from appointments
- Bathroom safety devices
- In-home support
- Prescription drug coverage
- Preventative dental cleanings and care
- Vision care and glasses
It’s important to note that not every Medicare Advantage plan offers all of these benefits. There is no requirement that a Medicare Advantage plan provide extra care and services. It must provide at least the same benefits as Original Medicare, as well as establish a max out-of-pocket on approved health care services.
