5 Outdoor Exercises for Seniors

June 10, 2018 | Sara Rosas

Now that the sun is shining and summer is right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to venture outside. Take your exercise routine from indoors to outdoors with these simple and effective exercises for seniors.

Walking

You don’t have to go fast to get a great workout. This low-impact exercise can still help you stay healthy and trim your waistline. According to the Mayo Clinic, regular brisk walking can help you maintain a healthy weight, manage conditions, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mood and improve your balance and coordination.

Swimming

We only get a few short months of summer here in Minnesota – you have to take advantage of every second! Swimming outside is a great way to build muscle while having fun and enjoying the outdoors.

Water aerobics

Water aerobics is a popular outdoor exercise for seniors for good reason – this low impact activity is gentle but powerful. Water aerobics is a fantastic way to increase muscle strength, build endurance, increase flexibility and alleviate pressure on joints.

Yoga

Roll up your mat and venture out to the park. Outdoor yoga includes all the benefits of yoga – flexibility, toning and strengthening – with the added benefits of a little Vitamin D. This is also a great group activity with a partner or child.

Yard games

Running around with the grandkids is another great way to get some exercise. If you’re not up to tag, there are plenty of low-impact yard games that are fun for all ages. Try classics like cornhole, shuffleboard or even flying a kite.

These outdoor exercises for seniors will help you enjoy the sun while also getting in a great workout.
