7 Ways Seniors Can Stay Sharp: Improve Mental Well-Being, Memory and Focus

June 29, 2022 | John Demko

In today’s day and age, one might find it easy to feel disconnected with the world. With that disconnection some may feel that their senses are dulled, or that their memory retention and focus have been diminished.

Luckily, there are many ways to combat these issues. Here are a few!

7 Ways to Improve Memory and Focus

1: Regular moderate exercise. Moving your body can increase blood flow to your brain. Even walking around the house more can lead to positive results!

2: Eating healthy. Eating right can affect not only your physical health, but your mental health as well. There are many resources available to those looking to partake in a healthier diet!

3: Attend community events. There are many events available to people in almost every area. These range from fundraisers, to community services, or even a pre-organized senior event! Getting out and engaging with others is a great way to stay sharp and engaged.

Twin City Underwriters hosts several in-person informational seminars every month. Learn more and register here!

4: Brain games. There are many free games just waiting to be played! If you are tech-savvy, there are many apps or computer games that you can simply download onto your device. For those who prefer physical games, most stores will carry something in this area.

5: Advanced education. Challenging your brain with different mental exercises can keep you on your mental feet. These exercises might be learning about new topics and games. If you still work, many jobs can be beneficial to maintaining focus and keeping your mind active.

6:  Reading. Simply reading books or articles is another way to increase one’s memory retention. Consider joining or starting a book club if you need some extra motivation!

7: Writing. Along with reading, writing also can increase memory retention. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to write a book; even journaling can be very beneficial!

There are many ways to stay sharp, and many resources to do so. Your Medicare plan may even offer additional opportunities for engaging your mind! Contact Twin City Underwriters for more information on what is covered under your specific plan.
